EDITORIAL: A 40 percent chance of AI

Weather forecasting has come a long way since you were a kid. We're still not sure that forecasts are all that accurate 10 days out, but when the local TV weather person can show you a graphic of where snow will stick in two days, but where the precipitation will be only ice the next county over, why, that's just miracle stuff.

Computer models are in use this very day, tracking that storm heading toward Florida. But now the experts say Artificial Intelligence will soon get its chance. It's already being plugged into the simulators.

"AI algorithms look for patterns in weather data, rather than solving equations as supercomputers do," The Wall Street Journal reports. "The pattern-hunting algorithms are trained on decades of weather data to predict what will happen in the days ahead."
