OPINION | BRADLEY GITZ: Only if Democrats win

Democrats switching out the winner of all their primaries in favor of someone who entered none of them isn't, of course, a good look for a party claiming to be defending democracy.

Still, there is no intrinsic reason why political parties have to select their nominees through voting in such primaries (and it was only relatively recently that both Democrats and Republicans began to do so, largely to their and the nation's detriment).

That party elites like Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi apparently orchestrated the replacement of Joe Biden with Kamala Harris based on their assessments of who had a better chance of winning in November is precisely what party elites exist to do.

No, the real problem with Democrat claims to be saving democracy from the predations of Donald Trump is that it represents the use of demagogy in the service of hysteria.
