Carson Paetow's two-run home run highlighted a three-run eighth inning for Southern Mississippi as it slipped away from Jonesboro's Tomlinson Stadium with a victory.
The Golden Eagles were tied 2-2 with Arkansas State (21-27-1, 1-17-1 Sun Belt Conference) before a double to left field by Davis Gillespie in the top of the eighth allowed Ozzie Pratt to run home and give his team a 3-2 lead. Two pitches later, Paetow sent a pitch high over the outfield wall to give Southern Mississippi (32-17, 16-9) its three-run lead.
ASU's Blake Burris singled to start the ninth inning. But Cason Tollett grounded into a double play and Jared Toler grounded out to first base to end the game.
