The hum of cicadas is a common sound in mid to late summer, but this year some states are in for something different. There are several species of cicadas, often called locust. There are approximately 13 species of annual cicadas that come out every year. Some of them sing during the day, others at dusk. Then there are two groups of periodical cicadas that are on either a 13- or 17-year life cycle. For the first time since 1803, the two periodical cicadas are going to emerge together in the US. The states that will have the largest numbers are Illinois, Missouri and northern Arkansas. I got to see them in St. Louis, and it was an amazing site to see.
