Figs

Figs can be grown in Arkansas, and now they are in season.

Most of us have eaten fig newton cookies, but have you ever eaten a fresh fig?  They are extremely sweet, and they can be grown here in Arkansas.  Fig trees make excellent yard trees or large bushes, as they do tend to get frozen to the ground in cold winters.  They have an extremely hardy root system, and when this happens, they produce a lot of shoots during that growing season, and sometimes become large bushes.

Thinning cuts may be necessary, to open the plant up, but any pruning should be done after all chances of bad weather has passed.

Figs are adapted to more soils than most fruit trees,  and they require a minimum of care to produce fruit for eating fresh or for preserving.
