El Dorado, circa 1928: The Lion Oil "Stills," or refinery, began in 1922 by Col. T.H. Barton (for whom Barton Coliseum is named). By 1925 it was refining 10,000 barrels of oil a day, and in 1939 became the first Arkansas Corporation to be traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Lion had hundreds of retail gas stations, but all were sold off as the company was acquired first by Monsanto and in recent years by an Israeli-connected company.
