In 1981, Wine Spectator magazine established its Wine Spectator Restaurant Awards to recognize excellence in restaurant wine programs and wine lists from around the world. The awards aim to highlight restaurants that offer outstanding wine selections, pairings, and service.
The awards are categorized into three levels: the Award of Excellence, the Best of Award of Excellence, and the Grand Award. The Award of Excellence honors restaurants with well-chosen wine lists that pair well with their cuisine. The Best of Award of Excellence is given to restaurants that go a step further, offering extensive selections with superior presentation and display. The Grand Award, the highest honor, is reserved for restaurants with exceptional wine programs featuring deep, vintage cellars and impeccable service.
Over the years, the Wine Spectator Restaurant Awards have grown in prestige, encouraging restaurants to elevate their wine offerings and educate their staff.
