SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France — Stephan Jaeger has a history of introducing himself with a number on his scorecard rather than explaining his German roots, his subtle Tennessee accent and a winding path that eventually led him to Le Golf National for the Paris Olympics.
Xander Schauffele, fresh off winning the British Open last week for his second major championship of the year, was playing the host course of the 2024 Summer Games on Sunday when Jaeger's name came up in conversation.
"I was there that week. Had no idea who he was," Schauffele, a 30-year-old Californian who will represent the United States when the men's individual tournament tees off Thursday, said of the longtime Chattanooga resident.
"That week" was a reference to the 2016 Ellie Mae Classic, a tournament on the PGA Tour's developmental circuit currently known as the Korn Ferry Tour.
