Perception is reality

The Republican political strategist Lee Atwater once said, "Perception is reality." The public perception of President Joe Biden after the debate last month is that he is old and tired. He looked a little better in the interview with George Stephanopoulos, but did little to dispel that opinion. His whispered voice, staring eyes and posture were not the essence of energetic vitality.

To compound that perception, he deflected George's pointed questions regarding whether or not he should stay in the race if he was not up to it by emphasizing his past accomplishments. As they say in the financial world, "past performance is not indicative of future results." His repeated insistence on staying the course because he is the only one who can "do the job" sounded hollow in light of his obvious frailties.
