Negative connotation

In reference to your front-page story on July 14 regarding the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump; I, as do many other writers, according to my research, object to your reference to Trump as the "ex-president" instead of former president or just president. "Ex-president" delivers a negative connotation, which I am sure was your intent. I'm guessing if you were making a reference to Barack Obama, it would have been President Obama. It would allow him the respect to which he is entitled.

It's never wrong to refer to a former president as "president." They do not lose that title. It shows a severe lack of respect and a lack of proper and respectful writing skills to refer to them as "ex."
