OPINION | BARKLEY THOMPSON: Age-old conflict

Must understand Holy Land history

On Oct. 7 of last year, Hamas raids from Gaza into Israel killed almost 1,200 Israelis, and Reuters reports that by July 10 of this year, Israel's consequent war with Hamas in Gaza has killed more than 38,000 Palestinians.

The past 10 months serve as a reminder that violence between Israeli Jews and Palestinians is nothing new. The conflicted relationship between these peoples, and the relationship of each group with the land, is long-standing and complex. Since last October, social media memes and talking heads have flattened that history, leading to widespread misinformation.

Israel is both the biblical and contemporary homeland of the Jewish people. However, the biblical nation of Israel ceased to exist in 722 B.C. with the Assyrian conquest, and Israel was not re-established until 1948.
