What’s hot to watch this summer

The heat is encouraging many of us to spend more time sheltering indoors than we do during the wintry months. So as long as we're hunkered down on a couch with a Vornado blowing at our faces, we might as well seek entertainment on streaming services. Here are some favorites:

"Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" (Max), airing its 11th season, continues to be one of the funniest, smartest, and most acerbic series on TV. It's super-smart political, social and news satire, delivered by a confident, self-deprecating (he has described himself as looking like, among other things, "a nearsighted parrot," "sad Harry Potter" and "a wooden marionette who wished on a star to be a real boy") comic master empowered with deep pockets that afford pulling off uniquely entertaining stunts like buying the contents of a closed Red Lobster in New York at auction--beating out a local bakery--then offering to buy the bakery new equipment if it would--for a week--re-imagine its signature cake bears with Oliver's likeness.
