A tough day at the plate led to a 2-0, season-ending loss for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff against Bethune-Cookman during the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament at the Gulfport Sportsplex in Gulfport, Miss.
Wildcats pitcher Halyne Gonzalez held UAPB (19-30) to one hit during the teams' losers bracket game Wednesday morning. The junior struck out 6 and walked 2 in 7 innings.
Jessica Alaan's sacrifice fly in the fifth inning gave Bethune-Cookman (19-31) a 1-0 lead. Shania Owens followed up with a run-scoring grounder in the sixth for Bethune-Cookman, and that was more than enough for the Wildcats to hold on. Briana Velazquez also had three hits in the win.
Ariana Gonzalez had the lone hit for UAPB, which lost to Florida A&M 2-1 in extra innings on Tuesday when Mia Blasingane scored in the bottom of the eighth on Kiauna Watson's bunt single.
