Thanks to a clutch hit from second baseman Lily Hood, the University of Central Arkansas softball team defeated Queens 1-0 in eight innings Wednesday in the ASUN Tournament in Oxford, Ala.
The No. 3-seeded Bears (25-25-1) and No. 7-seeded Royals (30-25) held one another scoreless through the first seven innings as both pitching staffs routinely worked out of jams.
Central got a runner into scoring position in the third and sixth innings, while Queens did so in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
After escaping yet another jam in the top of the eighth inning, which saw Queens advance runners to second and third, Central Arkansas finally found a breakthrough in the bottom half of the inning.
Freshman Renee Christian led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a single to right field.
