OPINION | WALLY HALL: Always expect the unexpected at the Derby

Anything can happen in the Kentucky Derby, and it has.

When you have 20 horses in an area made for 12, someone is going to get a bad trip, sometimes it is the favorite. So while Fierceness will go off Saturday as the favorite, every owner and trainer will be holding their breath for racing's fastest two minutes.

Fierceness, owned by Repole Stable and trained by Todd Pletcher, has already won more than $1.7 million. He was the 2-year-old champion after winning last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile by more than six lengths and he prepped for Saturday by winning the Florida Derby on March 30 by more than 13 lengths.

He's won 3 of 5 races by a combined 31 lengths. The two times he didn't win he broke badly.
