It wasn't the homecoming hoped for as Mystik Dan ran good, but on a track deemed muddy minutes before Saturday's Preakness Stakes, Seize the Grey broke on top and stayed there.
He held off the Kentucky Derby winner in the stretch and while it was not the moment the owners of Mystik Dan -- who all live in Arkansas and consider Oaklawn Racing Casino Resort in Hot Springs their home track -- had wanted, the race was not without a sentiment.
Seize the Grey is trained by D. Wayne Lukas, who is 88 years young and saddled his first thoroughbred 46 years ago. It was his seventh Preakness win, the first was in 1980, and his 15th Triple Crown victory.
Known as "Coach," Lukas has been training at Oaklawn for almost 20 years.
